About Zhengzhou

Historical Background

Zhengzhou is one of the eight ancient capitals in China, with a history dating back 8,000 years.

It was the capital of Shang Dynasty 3,600 years ago and has long been the political center of China.

Geographical Location

Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province. It is located in the hinterland of China’s central plains, 600 kilometers from Beijing.

Zhengzhou has an area of 7,446 square kilometers and a population of more than 10.14 million.


Zhengzhou is traditionally a major distribution center in central China. It is an important transportation hub in China.

Main national railway lines such as, Jinguang and Longhai, as well as Jingzhu and Liaohuo highways, all traverses in the city.

Zhengzhou is the largest rail marshalling yard in Asia, the largest carload goods transfer station in China, and one of the largest passenger stations in China.

Industrial Development

Henan is rich in mineral resources. Its reserves include coal, asbestos, natural gas, non-ferrous metals and aluminum.

Major agricultural products include wheat, corn, cotton, peanuts, mushrooms, tobacco, fruits and etc.

Zhengzhou is also an important food processing base in China.

Other industries include coach building, refractory materials, textiles and a growing number of high-technology industries.


With GDP of Zhengzhou exceeding RMB1 trillion in 2018, it has over-passed other cities in Henan and entered China’s “Trillion Club” for the first time, becoming one of the 16 cities in China achieving RMB1 trillion in GDP. In 2018 the total fiscal revenue of Zhengzhou hit RMB370.8 billion, 15.9% up over the previous year.

The Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange is one of China’s three futures exchanges, and also one of the earliest.

Retail centers are developed and expanded rapidly in Zhengzhou. National top retail centers include Metro Group, The Home World, Carrefour, Five Star Appliance, and so forth. 12 wholesale trade zones have been shaped.

Investment Opportunities

Zhengzhou has attracted foreign direct investment of US$4.2 billion.

In 2018, the direct import and export volume RMB 410.5 billion.

Investments are mainly engaged in manufacturing (such as electronics, petrochemical, machinery and building materials), real estate management and public utilities.

Mitsui, Sumitomo, C Itoh & Co. Ltd. from Japan, General Electric and International Telephone & Telegraph (ITT) from the US, and Renault from France are just a few of the major foreign investment companies in Henan.
